I am a professor of political science at Stanford University, with courtesy appointments in Philosophy, Law, and Education. I am associate director of the Institute for Human-Centered AI.

I teach and write about the governance of frontier science and technology. In the past, I've written about philanthropy in democratic societies, and the purposes of public education.

I was an early advisor to Giving Tuesday and served as the founding board chair.
